A Note from the artistic Directors

I Couldn’t Tell You Why marks a continued evolution for Refracted into the theatrical form of audio immersive theatre. We are so grateful to say that we are still here, bringing our audiences live, world-premier theatrical experiences that bend their understanding of how theatre looks and feels. We are also beyond lucky that Harrison, a celebrated playwright with a magnificent body of work, was excited by the challenge of building something with us that could be both seen and heard, separately but also together. As we at Refracted continue to search for nuance and empathy by telling “the other side of the story,” we asked Harrison at the beginning of this process to think about “an issue or ideology” that he would want to rip open, something around which we could complicate people’s thinking. What he brought us at first surprised us; with his work he seemed to say, what if we don’t look for an external issue or phenomenon to encounter - what if we look inward?

With I Couldn’t Tell You Why, Harrison has reminded us that our mission is one we can and should pursue via the heart, not only via the head. The casts and creatives you will both hear and see in this performance have worked dedicatedly and bravely to create something sensorily enrapturing for you today, and we’re so proud to have collaborated with them. And we’re thankful to you for joining us today. You’re the kind of people who encounter an audio immersive experience in the street and say, “yeah, I want to see what that’s all about.” And we love you for it. Stay curious.  We’ll keep creating, and when it’s all said and done, we’ll have plenty to discuss.

With gratitude beyond measure,

Graham Miller & Tova Wolff
