A Note from the artistic Directors
First and foremost, thank you for being here. Come hell or high water (or pandemic, or social unrest, or burning planet) we are here at the “theater”, together, today. Because of your support, Refracted Theatre Company has adapted, innovated, and remained nimble in the fight to produce theatre in 2020. And for that, we are very grateful.
We do not take for granted your trust in us to gather an audience to deliver a live performance right now. We can assure you we have taken great care to keep you and everyone involved safe. But everyone’s level of comfort is different. So we cherish that for you, like us, live theatre, done safely, is still a priority.
This workshop production of Homeless Garden marks many firsts for us as a company. Our first commissioned play. Our first outdoor performance. Our first marriage of live actors with audio theatre. And, proudly, our first sold out run! (Yes, it’s only two performances, but we are making theatre in a pandemic here, so we’ll take the win.) This production, like this play in many ways, is an experiment, as Graham and Matt continue to discover what this play can be in years to come.
Homeless Garden is also an undeniable embodiment of Refracted Theatre Company’s core mission. With this piece, from content to form, we aim to disrupt familiar narratives and defy your expectations. The way this story is being told is familiar, but also different. It’s comfortable yet strange, intimate yet abstract. Perhaps certain moments align with your beliefs, while others confront preconceived notions or biases that you, knowingly or unknowingly, hold dear.
That is what we do at Refracted Theatre Company. We disrupt. We complicate. We provoke. And what we kindly ask of you, is to listen empathetically, engage wholeheartedly, and then take action. As John Lewis said earlier this year, “When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something. Democracy is not a state. It is an act.”
Even if it is your first time with us, we welcome you to the Refracted Family. We hope to be your theatre for years to come.
